Cazares retires Sanchez in 108-lb title bout

Mexican Hugo Cazares went to Puerto Rico and beat a hometown favorite, Alex "Nené" Sanchez, by eighth-round technical knockout to retain his WBO 108-pound title.  Cazares is no stranger to Puerto Rican boxing fans, having claimed the title from another Boricua fighter, Nelson Dieppa in April. The 7000 fans in attendance were initially happy when Sanchez started strong, but after a good first round, he began to fade.  Just as round eight started, the doctor examined Sanchez's eye and recommended the bout be stopped.  Afterwards, Sanchez, rated #23 by Boxingtalk, announced his retirement, saying he did not want his family to see him take any more beatings.  He retires with a record of 31-6-1 with the WBO strawweight championship in his trophy case. In 1997, Sanchez defeated warrior Jose Burgos for the title and then lost it in his first defense to the greatest 105-pound boxer of all time, Ricardo Lopez. Cazares is now 21-3-1. He has not lost since 1999, and has three straight wins over Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico. source: El Nuevo Dia
