Calzaghe pounds on Lacy for twelve rounds

Joe Calzaghe is now the indisputable super middleweight championship of the world in light of his commanding victory over Jeff Lacy in England on Saturday night. Calzaghe dominated the battle of undefeated 168-pounders, administering a brutal beating that left Lacy bleeding and swollen. Calzaghe knocked Lacy down in the twelfth round and only a point deduction for holding denied him a shutout on the scorecards. The final scores were as lopsided as the fight itself: 119-105 and 119-107 (twice). Calzaghe shredded Lacy's defense from the outside and neutralized Lacy's vaunted left hook on the inside. He actually toyed with Lacy at several points during the bout. Lacy showed tremendous heart, trying to score a knockout right to the end even as his legs deserted him. Calzaghe continues as the sport's longest reigning champion, having held the WBO title since 1997, is now 41-0. His father, Enzo Calzaghe, deserves consideration for trainer of the year for drawing up a game plan that neutralized Lacy's power. Lacy drops to 21-1. He seemed fine, smiling and articulate in his post-fight interview, but hopefully will take several months off to recuperate from the beating. source: Showtime championship boxing
