Calzaghe doesn't leave it to judges

Calzaghe doesn't leave it to judges

Joe Calzaghe, worried about the appointment of a German judge in a title fight in Braunschweig, Germany, vowed that he would win inside the distance to avoid any possibility of a hometown decision in favor of Mario Veit. On Saturday, Calzaghe made good on his vow, taking out Veit in the sixth round of his WBO super middleweight  mandatory title defense. The BBC reports that Calzaghe (rated #1 by Boxingtalk) knocked Veit down once in the fifth round and twice in the sixth before the referee stopped the contest.  It was the second time Calzaghe knocked out Veit, rated #5 by Boxingtalk. In 2001, Calzaghe knocked Veit out inside a round. Hopefully, boxing fans will see Calzaghe vs. Jeff Lacy before the year is out. --Scott Shaffer
