Rob Calloway W10 Terry Smith... In Springfield, Missouri, two veterans who have spent their careers just below boxing's big time crossed paths in an entertaining heavyweight bout with Rob Calloway scoring perhaps the biggest win of his 74-fight career. Calloway scored an unusual knockdown, landing a punch just before the bell ended the eighth round that caused Smith to stagger forward into Calloway. When Calloway stepped away, Smith went down, a full second after the bell sounded, but it was a legitimate knockdown. Give Smith his due, he knew he needed a knockout to win, and despite being hurt at the end of the eighth, a tired Smith gave everything he had in the tenth and almost pulled it off, landing two big punches in an exciting final three minutes of action. Calloway, 66-7-1, won a unanimous decision by scores of 96-93 (twice) and 96-94. His work with trainer Marshall Kaufman seems to be paying off, but Calloway will have to decide between making money at heavyweight or making a championship run at cruiserweight, where paydays are harder to come by. Smith falls to 30-3 but with the heart he showed tonight, his phone should continue to ring. 1source: espn2 friday night fights
