CHRIS JOHN WINS WORLD FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Chris John W12 Juan Manuel Marquez... In Tenggarong City, Indonesia, Chris John earned the right to general recognition as the legitimate world champion by winning a unanimous decision overJuan Manuel Marquez on Saturday. The three judges scored the fight 116-110, 117-111 and 116-112, in favor of John. Marquez was penalized a point twice for low blows (the referee was a Hispanic, Guillermo Perez Pineda  for those wondering if John benefited fom hometown rulings).  The referee warned Marquez four times before taking away points in the tenth and eleventh rounds. Technically, John was the defending champ (he had the WBA title) and Marquez the challenger because Marquez was stripped by the IBF last year essentially over a dispute with his promoter. Still, his previous wins over Manuel Medina and then-WBA champ Derrick Gainer, plus a draw with Manny Pacquiao gave Marquez the strongest claim to being the true featherweight champion when Pacquaio moved up to 130. By conquering Marquez, that honor now goes to Chris John, 37-0-1. Marquez drops to 44-3-1. source: sports ticker
