Byrd to be guest commentator on Shobox

PRESS RELEASE: Former two-time world heavyweight champion Chris Byrd will serve as special guest commentator on the Friday, May 4 edition of ShoBox: The New Generation (SHOWTIME, 11 p.m. ET/PT). Byrd has worked previously as a guest boxing commentator for Fox Sports and KingVision and will be making his SHOWTIME debut. On May 4, he will join "ShoBox" announcers Nick Charles (blow-by-blow) and Steve Farhood (analyst) calling the two-fight heavyweight card.

A longtime Las Vegas resident, the personable, popular, well-spoken Byrd has a record of 40-3-1 with 26 knockouts. The southpaw won the WBO title by defeating Vitali Klitschko in December 2000 and the IBF crown by outpointing Evander Holyfield in December 2002.  Now 36-years old, Byrd is coming off a seventh-round TKO victory on April 18, 2007.

"I am looking forward to working with SHOWTIME," said Byrd, "especially this heavyweight showcase edition of ShoBox. Eddie Chambers is a great young prospect. He reminds me of myself when I was coming up. He has great speed and confidence.

?But Chambers will have to remember that (Dominick) Guinn is no pushover. This is the heavyweight division. One punch and it could all be over."

"Both fighters have something to prove," Byrd added. "Chambers needs to show that he belongs among the elite in the division. Guinn needs to prove that he is not finished and can still be a legitimate contender for a world title."
