On Friday November 12th at Schuetzen Park, North Bergen, New Jersey Scotty "Ace" Burrell and Deano "Bad News" Burrell will make their anticipated pro debuts. These two identical twin brothers have been creating a stir at Gleason's gym ever since their arrival to the Big Apple. The Burrell's will be competing in two separate bouts on this evening, boxingtalk.com was able to catch up with Scotty as he is just days away from being paid to play.
BT: How are you feeling being just three days away from stepping into the ring for the first time as a professional?Scotty Burrell: Well I'd be lying if I did not say I am a little nervous, but it's a good nervous, I'm just more anxious and ready to just do my thing. I'm happy to be on this show and its a real blessing to be starting my pro career with my brother on the same night. We are both excited to make our professional debut; we feel confident relaxed and prepared physically and mentally. Since moving back to the U.S we have taken our time to make sure that we didn't rush into our professional debuts. We tried to give ourselves time improve and adapt to the improvements our coach made in our fighting styles, prepare physically and mentally and also to pick the right team of people around us in order to help us reach the top. We feel we have reached that point now.
BT: Where were you two born? What's your nationality?SB: We were born in Queens, NY, we moved to London, England when we were just under two years old. Our heritage is Jamaican so we are Jamaican Americans.
BT: How old are you? SB: I am 22 years old
BT: How long have you been boxing?SB: We have been boxing for 10 years now, our first fight was for Samuel Montague boxing gym in South East London, we were 12 years old at the time.
BT: How did you get into the sport?SB: Well our Father is a huge boxing fan and he practiced Karate in his youth, so from a young age he taught us basic fighting moves and installed a fighters mentality in us, we would always from a young age watched boxing matches and reenact fights . When we hit the 11 years old we started secondary school (middle school) we discovered a boxing gym, and the rest is history.
BT: How long have you been in the U.S.?SB: We have been back in the U.S nearly one year now
BT: How do you like New York?SB: So far, we both love NY. It has been all we hoped for and more, as far as boxing we have learned so much in the relatively short time we have been here. Outside of boxing NY is just as good, growing up in London we were already city people but no city can beat NY, everything you could want is here.
BT: What's been the biggest adjustment since you came to the States?SB: We were already used to city life, so although NY is still different than London it was an easy adjustment to make in that respect, however i would say the biggest adjustment we have had to make is not being around our direct family and friends. We have made some good friends in NY but some of the friends we have in England we have known as long as we can remember. So I would say not having our friends and parents, brother and sister around has been the biggest adjustment, back in England my phone would ring all the time, now it doesn't ring nowhere near as much.
BT: What are your ultimate goals in boxing?SB: My ultimate goal in boxing is to become a world champion and a fighter that is remembered in history as one of the best.
BT: Is it true you and your brother are both college graduates?SB: Yea, my brother and I both have Bachelor's degrees in Social Science of Sport and Business Studies.
BT: Do you plan on continuing your studies? Or using your degrees?SB: As we stand we do not plan on continuing our studies, but I believe you never stop learning in life so we plan to always continue to learn and become smarter. Right now all our focus is solely on boxing and achieving our goals in the sport, however the knowledge gained from our degrees will always come in handy for the business side of boxing. So although we do not plan on pursuing a career with our degrees at the moment we will always use the knowledge we gained from it.
BT: I hear you recently signed on with a managing team who are they? SB: We do have a team of managers; they are Rich Komissar, Sam Rejtig and Paul Vario
BT: How has it been working with Hector Roca? How did you hook up with him?SB: Working with Hector Roca has been the best experience of our careers, Hector has and continues to teach so much, in and outside of boxing. He is a no nonsense coach and he worked hard to correct the bad habits that we had when we first started working with him after our studies. Hector is like family to us. We met Hector about 5yrs or so back when we came to Gleason's gym prior to university studies and we found that we learned more in the few weeks we was with him than we had in all our year of training, right there our mind was made up that when we are ready to turn professional Hector would be our coach. We asked Hector then if he would train us when we come back and he agreed so we kept in contact and made it happen when we came back last year.
BT: Who did you look up to in boxing when you were younger?SB: There are many fighters that we looked up to in boxing for all different reasons. Mike Tyson is one of our all time favorites; I think that in his early career he showed what dedication, commitment, hard work and belief in your coach can offer you. I also looked up to Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard for the confidence that they showed and the heart and courage they showed in the careers to fight nearly all of the best fighters in their eras. The list of fighters we looked up to in boxing could go on for ages we are both boxing fans as well as fighters and have always studied the sport and tried to learn from great fighters which have come before us.
BT: Did you ever emulate anybody (boxer) growing up?SB: I don't think that I emulated any one fighter growing up, I always studied boxing and leant from other boxers but I always tried to ensure that I had my own style. I am Scott Burrell and my brother is Dean Burrell and being ourselves is what have always felt will help us to reach the top
BT: Did anyone else in your family box? SB: Nobody in my immediate family boxed, my father practiced and competed in Karate but never boxed. I have a few cousins who did box however.
