Boxingtalk salutes Mikey Garcia on his retirement

Boxingtalk salutes former four-division champion Mikey García who announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 34. Born in Ventura, California, Garcia made his announcement announced on social media, modifying his personal Instagram account ny writing in his profile information: “Retired World Champion 126, 130, 135 and 140 lbs.” It has been almost sixteen years after his professional debut in July 2006 against Domingo Herrera Mendoza. In 2013, Garcia got his first title, the IBF featherweight crown with a controversial win over Orlando Salido. Garcia did not come out for round nine, but the bout was allowed to go to scorecards where Garcia won a technical decision. Later that year, Garcia captured the WBO super featherweght title by defeating Roman Martinez. He took a long layoff due to a contractual dispute with his promoter, Top Rank, and lost his title due to inactivity. However, with one tunr-up in 2016, he gained the WBC lightweight championship with a stoppage of weak champion Dejean Zlaticanin. In 2018, he became IBF junior welterweight champion by defeating Sergey Lipinets. He tried for a fifth divisional championship but lost to Errol Spence in 2019. The last time he fought was in October 2021, when he lost to Sandor Martin by majority decision. Leaving the sport with a record of 40-2 with 30 KOs, Garcia also had notable wins over Adrien Broner, Robert Easter, Jessie Vargas, Juan Manuel Lopez and other ex-title holders.
