Jr welterweight prospect Ty Barnett (12-0-9KO) sat down with Boxingtalk right after his 1st round knockout over Anthony Cobb, this past Saturday night in Tunica, Mississippi. Barnett is trained by coach Barry Hunter, and comes from the same neck of the woods as his two friends, Anthony and Lamont Peterson.
BT – Nice job tonight Ty, you took care of business tonight.TB – I felt good man, I was in there with a cagey veteran. He couldn't stand my power, I didn't really get any work. We are going to have step up the competition, these opponents so far aren't getting me any work in. I need to step the round up, and step up the competition.
BT – It's nice to get the easy wins, but it's also good to get good work in too.TB – Most definitely, I need to step the rounds up, and step up the competition man, I am ready.
BT – You are trained by Barry Hunter, one of the best in the country. Talk about how important he is to you and your career.TB – He's one of the best trainers in the country, and I couldn't do this without him. He is everything to me man, everything.
BT – You also train, and are very close to the Peterson brothers, talk about that.TB – We all came from the dirt together, we all been through the struggle together. It's great working with those guys. I get the best work that anyone can get with those guys. I don't have to go around looking for sparring partners, I got my hand full at home. I love those guys, there are like brothers. We came up together in the street game, and the fight game.
BT – For those who have not seen you fight, describe the style of fighter that you are.TB – I am pretty much a boxer/puncher. Everybody compares me to Diego Corrales, and that's an honor, he's a great legend. People say that I fight like him, and to be compared to him is an honor. I can do it both, I can mix it up, and box from the outside. I am tall for my weight class.
BT – Being as tall as you are, I am guessing really is an advantage for you in the ring.TB – It's a big advantage, it's a big advantage.
BT – When can we expect you back in the ring?TB – I think I will be on January 4th, on Showtime on the under card of Anthony and Lamont's card.
BT – Any closing thoughts for the fans?TB – I am ready, I am ready for anyone, bring it on.
