After compiling a 25-5 amateur career and a handful of titles, Brooklyn-born boxer Delen Parsley (4-0 with 2 KOs) will see his professional journey continue on March 29th when he takes on David Lopez (3-4) in a six-round light middleweight match-up. The bout is part of Dibella Entertainment's broadway boxing series. In this exclusive Boxingtalk interview, the young gun speaks out on his career and more.
Benny Henderson Jr: What inspired you to want to become a fighter?
Â
Delen Parsley: My Dad, I came from a fighting family so I naturally fell into it.
Â
BH: Who are some of the fighters that you look up to past and present?Â
DP: Jersey Joe Walcott [world heavyweight champion 1951-1952, robbed vs. Joe Louis in 1947] was one of my favorites; I would have to say that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is one of my recent favorites. Joe Louis, I wasn’t a big [Muhammad] Ali fan.
Â
BH: You are not a big Ali fan but you are a fan of Floyd Mayweather? That sounds funny in some ways because were both talented fighters and very outspoken. Â
DP: For me, Ali talked a lot and he was good for his era, but I don’t feel that he was as technically sound as Mayweather is.
Â
BH: When people read this you are going to have some fans and you are going to have some haters but that is what publicity I all about. (Both Laugh)
Â
DP: Oh yes, not everybody is going to like you.
Â
BH: Give the readers a little bit of your background as far as your amateur career is concerned.
Â
DP: My amateur wasn’t that long, growing up I was in and out of boxing, I wanted to try new things. But I got serious about boxing at the age of thirteen. I had thirty amateur fights, I was 25-5.
Â
BH: Some people harp on fighters not having a solid long amateur career behind them. Do you feel your amateur career was solid enough to be a top competitor in the professional ranks?
Â
DP: Yes definitely, because I have been in the gym since I was eight. I feel if you have a long amateur career, you leave too much in the amateurs. That is why not too many amateurs made great pros; I feel like I have been around boxing so long and been in the ring with great champions and I have got the fundamentals down. I have learned more in the pros than I ever did as an amateur, I always fought more like a pro. I have never been one to throw pitter patter flurries, I throw good solid technical fights.
Â
BH: As far as the one who have not seen you in action, how would you describe your style? Â
DP: I am more of boxer/puncher, I can box my ass off, I am a very decent puncher and I am tall. I can fight inside and outside, I feel like I am a well rounded fighter.
Â
BH: Why should a fight fan want to come see a Delen Parsley fight?
Â
DP: Well because they can expect to see good boxing, I am in there to make it an exciting fight. I am a tall fighter, I am smart, I am not going to go out there like Paul Williams and throw a million punches and have no defense what so ever. I will go out there and put on a show, I will be crafty. I will use my jab, slip a lot and I can punch.
Â
BH: You have your fifth professional fight coming up the twenty-ninth, you are fighting a cat by the name of David Lopez, do you know anything about this guy you are fighting?Â
DP: I know he is a southpaw, he likes to wait a lot, but that is really I know all about him.
Â
BH: In closing is there anything you would like to say to the fight fans, your opponent or anybody in the fight world?
Â
DP: To my opponent I really have nothing to say to him expect to bring you’re A game because I am brining mine. To the fight world look out for me, I feel that I am an impressive fighter and I am a fighter who fights with passion.
