GL: Boxingtalk welcomes you Carlos, we've never had you on before. You're a red hot featherweight prospect 5-0 (5KO's), tell us a bit about yourself and what you bring to the boxing game? "It's great to be here on Boxingtalk where the top fighters are always talking. This is my pro debut here. I'm just building myself up. I'm 5-0Â with 5KO's like you said, I recently signed with Shelly Finkel and Luis DeCubas Jr as my managers. I'm expecting to get in nine fights this year before I make a lot of noise in 2009."
GL: Do you know who you'll be fighting on January 25?Carlos Velasquez: "No, I'm leaving that up to Shelly and Luis. I'm going to be ready for whoever they put in front of me."
GL: How would you describe your style?CV: "I wouldn't consider myself a boxer. I'm not a runner. I want to fight a guy who is right in front of me. I like to work the body and work the body some more. I like to make fights."
GL: What part of your game do you feel needs the most sharpening?CV: "A little more conditioning and experience. I plan on gettin nine or ten fights in this year and with that experience under my belt I will only get better. Every young fighter forgets to work off the jab and go to the body and those are two things I never forget. Experience is the main thing I need."
GL: Who was your boxing idol growing up?CV: "Tito Trinidad"
GL: Who do you like in Trinidad-Jones?CV: "Trinidad."
GL: Each of your opponents has had a losing record, are you hoping your January 25 opponent is someone with a winning record?CV: "This is up to my manager and promotional team. My job is to train and knock people out."
GL: How long have you been fighting?CV: "Me and my brother have been fighting since we were twelve years old."
GL: What made you want to box?CV: "At first it was just a hobby because I wanted to be able to defend myself in the streets. It was rough where I grew up, but then I started getting good at it and in Puerto Rico you either have to be a baseball player or a boxer. I'm not a street guy and I thought I was doing good with boxing, then I ran into a couple of people who showed me a whole lot and now my managers think I'm one of the best prospects in the world."
GL: What kind of amatuer background do you have?CV: "I was 230-20. In my last fight I beat Gamboa, who won the Gold Medal at the Olympics in the Centro American Games."
GL: Do you consider yourself a puncher?CV: "No doubt about it. I can knock you out with either hand and I can put in work both upstaris and downstairs. I feel I'm a knockout puncher no matter who I'm fighting and eventually that will show."
GL: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?CV: "I want to thank Boxingtalk for the interview. This is going to be a big year for me and I want to put the boxing world on notice that me and my brother are going to become the first twin brother champions of the world."
