The votes have been counted, the final weekend's results have been considered and Boxingtalk's 2007 year-end awards are in! And the winners are...
BOXER OF THE YEAR: FLOYD MAYWEATHER, JR. - With wins over Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, Mayweather went 2-0 in the sport's two most-watched fights. The De La Hoya verdict goes in the books as a split decision, but the truth is, Mayweather came in as the true world champion at 147 pounds, and he defeated the true 140-pound champion and one of the 154-pound champions and was never in trouble against either one. Floyd beware, if you makes good on yout vow to take 2008 off, there will be a backlash from us hardcore fans who want to see more boxing with the stars and less dancing.Â
RUNNER UP: KELLY PAVLIK - All Pavlik did was destroy tough Jose Luis Zertuche, flavor-of-the-month Edison Miranda and then get off the canvas to take the world middleweight title away from Jermain Taylor. A strong case can be made that Pavlik deserved 2007's award over Mayweather, but he just didn't get the votes.
HONORABLE MENTIONS: MIGUEL COTTO - Wins over Zab Judah, Shane Mosley and Oktay Urkal garnered him some votes. If there is a knock on Cotto's canmdidacy, its that the Mosley fight was very close and he needed a low blow to stop a Judah rally. Neither of those facts take away from Cotto's tremendous year, but to beat the year Floyd had, you have to be damn near perfect. The sad thing for boxing is that Mayweather may avoid Cotto while he tries to go Hollywood.
JUAN DIAZ- Diaz made two titleholders, Acelino Freitas and Julio Diaz quit on their stools in 2007. A good year, but he didn;t quite get the superfights that he needed to propel him to boxer of the year. After all, Freitas is on the fade and Diaz was more of a belt holder than legit champ.
JOE CALZAGHE - In the biggest fight in the history of Wales, the longest reigning champion beat back a spirited challenge from Mikkel Kessler, who was the undefeate downer of two sanctioning body titles. His other fight of 2007 was an easy stoppage over reality show contestant Peter Manfredo.
DAISUKE NAITO - This Japanese flyweight handed WBC champion Pongsaklek Wongjongkam his first loss since 1996- and Naito had already lost twice to Wongjongkam! He capped off the year by embarrassing Japanese teen idol Daiki Kameda, winning a wide unanimous decision and handling Kameda's egregious fouling and ridiculous trash talking with the dignity and class that Japanese fans expct from their champions.
