Boxingtalk's Mini-Monday Mailbag

Crawford-Spence, GGG/Sanchez and Jarrell Miller's self-sabotage

Greg, Hope all is well  with you. I see you had Bob on the phone yesterday, did you ask him if he made that phone call to Haymon or no? I mean he was adamant that he was going to call Haymon [about potential welterweight unification between Errol Spence (pictured) who Haymon controls, and  Terencew Crawford, whom Arum promotes] first thing on Tuesday or Wednesday morning, well it's Thursday afternoon now so what's up? Leon's Response: Nope. Sure didn't. I know he didn't. I know he's not calling Al and Al's not calling him. Why? They don't really want to make that fight. Why? Because it's not big enough yet. Sure it's huge to the die-hard boxing fans, but that fight isn't mainstream yet. If they fought each other now, they'd be lucky to crack 500k buys regardless of what platform distributed the PPV. Lewis-Tyson, Mayweather-Pacquiao are the kind of fights big enough to make rivals work together, Crawford-Spence is not that. Not yet at least. Maybe in 2021 it could be big enough, but it isn't right now. Al's going to be able to match Spence in a plethora of interesting enough bouts, while Top Rank continues to book the best opposition they can find to fight Crawford. Crawford-Prograis will happen before Crawford-Spence.

Might be nothing to it but I saw where Jarrell Miller was getting his photo taken with Dana White yesterday down in Florida. Not sure what that’s all about.

Leon's Response: Assuming they both take a lot of pictures with a lot of people everyday. Most likely nothing to it. Jarrell's got a lot of charisma and he knows how to promote himself and his fights, but talk about a bone-headed move? OMG. This has got to be one of the worst, if not the worst mistake I've ever seen a boxer make. I sincerely hope I'm wrong about this, but chances are he'll never see the kind of money he just blew ($8M for the Anthony Joshua fight plus a guarantee for future fights) for the rest of his career. I feel bad for Jarrell, but not as bad as I feel for boxing fans who were looking forward to him challenge Joshua. There's no sabotage like self-sabotage.

Good read.. As you point out., Gennady "GGG" Golovkin is still making more than he once was. It is [now former trainer] Abel Sanchez who actually is intoxicated with greed. And pushing that grievance thru the media is lame. Interesting read but lame on his part. Lack of tact on Mr Sanchez's part.

Leon's Response: I don't know if you know this but Abel's got bread brother. Before he ever started working with GGG Abel was well off as he owns a large portion of Big Bear, California which is prime real estate. GGG made a statement and Abel took calls and explained the story. Whenever the boxer's wife gets involved in his business affairs, things go left more times than not for the trainer, especially one's looked at as father figures. Jack Mosley could attest to this and he was Shane's actually pops when Jin Mosley ended that training situation.

G, I was shocked to see GGG do Abel like that. I thought they were damn near family! I’m sad for Abel, I know that has to hurt being treated like that by someone who was like a son to you. Dammit.....I was rollin with team GGG but this is upsetting. $100M deal and you cut your trainers pay by half? Ouch bro.......OUCH!

Leon's Response: Ouch is right. He was cutting the pay by 80% and Abel's counter of less than half of what he was making was refused.
