Boxingtalk's Fire with Sechew Powell

JA: How's training coming along for your fight on May 6? "It's coming along very good. I feel ver confident and I just feel real positive about it. It's a real positive feeling. I've been working very hard. I just finished up the first half of my training camp and I'm just tightening up the loose ends now. I'm feeling reall good."

JA: You are facing your third undefeated fighter in your career so far. What does this do for your mindset?

SP:"I'm up for the challenge first and second these are the fights that people want to see from me right now. They want to see me in there with these undefeated guys. I want to see myself in there with these kind of guys. I feel like after I am successful against this type of opponent that I will have in front of me which is a very solid and tough guy and it's not going to be an easy night of fights but I feel once I'm successful against him people will no longer see me as a prospect. I think they will have no choice but to see me as a contender."

JA: In your last fight on Jan 21 you won an eight round unanimious decision at the Hammerstein Ballroom. What did you come out learning from that fight?

SP:"I just got a chance to exercise alot of my boxing techniques and skills. And that was my goal. I was originally supposed to go in there with another fighter.I was supposed to go in there against a tough Russian. In my opinion he got scared and didn't want to rumble with me. That's what I call it. Everybody sugar coats it and calls it another thing and say he was this or that. My opinion is he's scared and he didn't want to fight. So what happened was I just ended up exercising my boxing skills. I didn't really take it as a challenge. i didn't face who I prepared for and I didn;t know what to expect and I just used my boxing skills to get me through the night. And that's what I did on the 21st. But at the same time I feel I had a good showing and people got a chance to see my boxing ability and ring generalship."

JA: How excited are you to be stepping into the ring on May 6?

SP:"I'm extremely excited. I'm very appreciative of the opportunity that Showtime bought me back again. It's just a blessing. I'm not going to let them down.I'm going to turn it up and let all the fireworks loose on May 6."

JA: Being that you'll be performing on ShoBox does this put any added pressure on you to turn out a good performance?

SP:"Not neccessarily. Every fight is the same to me. It's the same amount of pressure for every single fight. In my mind I must win all fights whether it's an undercard fight or the headline. There is no added pressure. The only thing is that I'm defenitely looking to put forth my best performance to date. I'm in the best shape of my career so far as a professional and I lok to put on the best performance than I have put on so far."

JA: In your opinion what does 2005 hold for you?

SP:"I would say 2005 you should be seeing Sechew in the top ten and in contention for a title shot for one of the major belts in the division. I consider myself the uncrowned junior middleweight champion of the world. I have alot of skills and talent. I'm rich. That's why I call myself Black Gold. I'm rich with technique. My graceful movement. It's rich in value as far as boxing goes and I defenitely see myself in contention for a title by the end of the year."

JA: Being that you're working out of the Starrett City boxing gym, have you been working with the Chin Checkers, Curtis Stevens and Jaidon Codrington?

SP:"Absolutely. I'm going to be working with the Chin Checkers and various professional fighters. I go from gym to gym. I don't stick to one gym. I have been around the sport of boxing expecially on the New York scene for many, many years so I'm well connected with the entire boxing community so I'm able to go from different gyms and get work and work with different professional fighters."

JA: Is there anything you want to say to your fans and the people all around the world on Boxingtalk.com?

SP:"I want to letthem know that I'm a man on fire. You don't want to miss the flame burn. I;m going to be burning on May 6 and I don't want anyone to miss the show because there are going to be alot of fireworks. I want to give a shoutout to Havoc Boxing. I want to give a shoutout to Grant Boxing and once again to the entire Boxingtalk family. You, Mr OnFire, Ray Campbell, Ben, Greg, you all do a great job over there and I appreciate the coverage you guys have been giving me throughout my career."
