Bomb Scare at MSG: Donovan George makes NYC debut!

Donovan “Da Bomb” George, the undefeated prospect from Chicago, Illinois is set to make his Big Apple debut this Friday evening at the Theatre in Madison Square Garden. This heralded 22 year old from Chi-town will be part of the supporting cast to the John Duddy versus Yori Boy Campos main event. The fight card which is titled "Shamrocks and Sombreros" is being promoted by “Irish Ropes”.

George will be making his 11th fight as a professional and looks to add another number to his win column. “Da Bomb” owns a record of 9-0-1 with 7 knockouts. In George’s last outing he destroyed the over matched Joe Varela in a mere 2:55 seconds, earning him a 1st round knockout on July 21st.

“My energy is through the roof and my excitement level is at an all time high. I am ready to go and can’t wait for Friday. You are going to see a massacre,” said George.

The sport of boxing is and has always been fueled by targeting ethnicity and by taking advantage of people’s nationalism. George is part Irish descent, from his mother and part Greek from his father. George is aware on how this boxing card is being promoted and knows that the atmosphere will be electric. The brash young man from the “Windy City” is eager to be making his first trip to New York City and is even more stoked to be fighting at the world’s most famous arena.

“I’m super pumped up. I am looking forward to being in New York and I am prepared for a 15 rounder. My conditioning is great. The hard part for me is over in my eyes. My workouts and my training are the hardest part of my career. The fights are fun. I’m ready to go out there and put my talents on display and give the people of New York a good show,” said George.

Part of George’s conditioning program is out of the norm of what other prize fighters do to get themselves prep for battle. Since the start of the summer “Da Bomb” has been getting himself in shape by catching bombs. Not in the literal sense but in the figurative, you see George has been working out with his older brother Nick George. Nick George is a college football quarterback. “Da Bomb” has added football drills to his work out plans. According to “Da Bomb” football has allowed him to break up the monotony of the conventional boxing routine.  “Da Bomb” feels that working out with his brothers football team has made has made him quicker and more agile.

“I’ve been working out 3 times a day. I go to the boxing gym and work out with my dad (Peter George), who trains me, then I do my regular running or I do speed drills with the football team and then I go to a fitness center and work with a personal trainer. I’ve been using the core ball and doing weight training. I really feel stronger than I’ve felt in the past and it helps me relax”, stated George.

To hear “Da Bomb” speak you can genuinely sense the tone of restlessness in his voice and you get an impression of someone who enjoys his profession. His boldness may be the asset that propels him to him stardom. However Cestus Management brain trusts Mike Michael say that his fighter’s confidence should not to be confused with arrogance or bravado. Michaels is emphatic in saying that George is well grounded and is not someone who lets hype blurry his vision.

“Da Bomb” is a special fighter and he is a great young man. He’s not only our fighter he is a part of our family,” said Mike Michael of Cestus Management.

The man who will be trying to add a 1 in the loss column for “Da Bomb” is Gabriel Rivera of Harlingen, Texas. Rivera brings a 7-3 record with 4 knockouts. “Da Bomb” and Rivera are scheduled to go 6 rounds at the contracted weight of 164 pounds.

“Rivera is a tough kid, he’s durable but he’s going to get executed,” said Michael.

This is supposed to be the last fight for George above the 160 pound weight limit. It is Cestus Managements plan to drop George into the middleweight realm and see how body reacts is. Nevertheless Michael feels that George’s greatness will come at the super middleweight division, simply because of his man’s built. There might be another possible 2 more fights for “Da Bomb” if all goes well against Rivera.

“Right now there is no rush. We are going to stick to our plan. Its hard at times because of the talent he has, I have a lot of experience so I know when to pull the reigns in. In 2007 around this time next year we are going to focus on one of the North American belts. Also we have big plans to showcase him on the networks, ESPN, Shobox, etc.,” stated Michael.

It is not hard to see that Michael is following the same formula that he used to guide his most well known pupil “Mighty” Mike Arnaoutis. The undefeated Arnaoutis will be challenging for the WBO version of the junior welterweight title in November.

“I’m excited to be back in the ring again. I hope the people come out; I’m ready to do my part. I know I am not the main event, but I intend on stealing the show. I have people coming from Chicago, I’m just ready to go”, said George.

“Donovan is making his New York City debut, the Big Apple it gets no bigger than that. They are the hardest fans to win over. An explosion is coming be ready, 5000 Irishman get ready there is another fighting Irishman coming your way,” said Michael.
