Starting his campaign as a welterweight, Barboza defeated Kenneth Sims Jr. in Anaheim, California.  Barboza dominated the contest and was declared the winner on all three judges' scorecards after twelve rounds. The fight served as the main event of a Golden Boy Promotions card in Anaheim, California. Now 33-1, Barboza rebounded nicely from his last fight, a decision loss to then-world junior welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez. Sims is now 22-4-1.
