The 3 Time National Amateur Champion Takes on Darnell Wilson on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights
B.J. Flores Biography: Benjamin Joseph Flores was born on January 29, 1979 in San Francisco, CA. Born into a boxing family, BJ began attending the gym at four years old while watching his father Frank train his older brothers and assist Olympic coach Ken Adams train future champions Vince Phillips and Kennedy McKinney.
Frank Flores trained all four of his sons to amateur glory. In one particular Golden Gloves tournament, all four Flores boys, BJ, Jeremy, Joshua and Ryan, each won their respective divisions on the same night. As a teenager, however, BJ's potential became evident. After becoming National Golden Glove Champion at light heavyweight, BJ was offered a full football scholarship to BYU. The all state wide receiver also became all state in track & field. BJ Flores was an accomplished three sport star athlete.
While attending BYU BJ decided it was time to put others before himself and became a Mormon missionary in Mexico. For two years BJ lived in one of the poorest areas of Mexico and helped the poor by assisting in building houses, installing roofs, and other labor intensive work that would make life just a little easier for those less fortunate.
While in Culiacan, Mexico BJ began training at the same gym where Julio Caesar Chavez trained as a child. Initially, the town and gym did not think much of BJ as a fighter, but after watching Flores hand out numerous beatings in sparring, the locals began calling him "Peligroso," meaning “dangerous”.
After returning from Mexico BJ concentrated on his education while attending three different universities and majoring in Communications.
With his tough and valuable experience in some of the roughest gyms in Mexico, BJ Flores went on to win the U.S. Championships at heavyweight in 2001 and 2002. The three sport star in high school was now a three time national amateur boxing champion.
BJ Flores turned pro in May of 2003 and has never looked back. As a professional heavyweight BJ signed a major contract with the predominant boxing promoter, Main Events. Flores quickly became known for having one of the best jabs in boxing. When BJ decided to move down to the cruiserweight division, the 200lb powerhouse reeled off two straight first round knockouts. After five dominating performances at cruiserweight, BJ signed a promotional deal with Duva Boxing. The three time national amateur boxing champion is now a full fledged title contender and ranked by multiple sanctioning bodies. BJ "El Peligroso" Flores is currently undefeated as a professional fighter and has amassed a record of 20-0 with 13 knockouts.
This and That: Being the son of a U.S. Army pilot, B.J. Flores has lived in many places. After being born in San Francisco and spending much of his childhood at Ft. Hood in TX, BJ also lived in Missouri, Utah, and Mexico. Now BJ Flores resides in Phoenix AZ with his wife Stephanie. BJ’s grandfather Ralph Flores was a famed pilot who in 1963 crashed his plane in the Yukon Mountains. When the original search by U.S. authorities turned up nothing, BJ’s Aunt Clara sent a letter to President John F. Kennedy pleading for the search to continue. On orders of President Kennedy, the rescue team was sent out searching again. On day 49, Ralph Flores and his co-pilot Helen Kaleen were found. The two were alert but frostbitten and severely famished. A TV movie about the ordeal aired in 1975 with none other than Ed Asner playing Ralph Flores. Twenty years later Frank Flores was piloting a Rio Airways Jet when it was taken hostage by an Iranian terrorist. The terrorist attempted to use Frank Flores as a human shield but when he attempted to switch planes, Mexican authorities foiled the plot. The Flores family roots are as strong in life as they are in boxing.
