Amateur championships update!

The 2005 World Amateur Boxing Championships are under way in Mianyang City, China, and after the first day of competition, the United States has won two of its first three bouts. Featherweight Mark Davis of Cleveland, Ohio and welterweight Boyd Melson of Fort Carson, Colorado both grabbed their first wins of the tournament while lightweight Michael Evans of  Dayton, Ohio dropped his opening bout, losing a 25-7 decision to China's Hu Qing. Davis topped Chadi Abelkader of Algeria 38-32 while Nelson defeated a Japanese opponent, Hirano Yoshiyuki by a convincing 24-12 margin. Also, 2004 Olympian Sherzod Abdurahmonov, representing Uzbekhistan, stopped Mario Duro of Spain at junior middleweight. source: USA Boxing
