At the World Amateur Championships in China, bantamweight Gary Russell, Jr. of Maryland and super heavyweight Mike Wilson of Oregon both recorded their first World Championships wins on behalf of the United States on Wednesday. However, three of their teammates were eliminated from the competition. The seventeen-year old Russell faced Detelin Stefanov Dalakliev of Bulgaria. He led by a slim 18-15 margin going into the final round and managed to hold on to his advantage over the last two minutes for a 25-21 decision over Dalakiev. After watching three straight teammates lose, Wilson got off to a slow start but increased his aggression to win a 27-20 decision. Light welterweight Karl Dargan of Philadelphia, had one win under his belt in China but could not overcome a sprained elbow and lost to Serik Sapyiev of Kazakhstan in a 37-26 decision. Darren Sutherland of Ireland outclassed Edwin Rodriguez of Worcester, Massachusetts 28-8 in a middleweight bout and Brooklyn, New York's William Rosinsky dropped a 31-13 decision to China's Lei-Yu Ping in a light heavyweight bout. At the close of Wednesday's action, the United States had six boxers remaining in the tournament. source: USA Boxing
