Alvarez uppercut closes Saunders' eye, leads to corner retirement

Canelo Alvarez TKO8 Billy Joe Saunders... After eight competitive rounds in Arlington, Texas, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez added Billy Joe Saunders' WBO title to the WBA and WBC super middleweight championships he already owned. Towards the end of round eight, Alvarez landed a big uppercut as Saunder bent low that closed Saunders' left eye. Saunders completed the round but decided not to come out for the ninth, ceding his title to Alvarez by technical knockout. It was an anti-climatic end to a good eight rounds of fighting. Saunders was taken to the hospital to determine whether his orbital was broken. At the time of the stoppage, Alvarez lead on all three cards by scores of 78-74 (twice) and 77-75, but it was a competitive encounter, with Saunders using the 22-foot ring to his advantage and landing punches from different angles. Afterwards, Alvarez called out IBF title holder Caleb Plant for a four-belt unification fight in September.
