Alvarez defeats Golovkin by unanimous decision

Canelo Alvarez W12 Gennadiy Golovkin... World super middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez was the superior boxer in Las Vegas on Saturday, defeating two-belt middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin by unanimous decision. Though Alvarez clearly got the better of the action, the official scores were shockingly close-- 115-113 (twice) and 116-112 for Alvarez. Boxingtalk scored it 117-111 for Alvarez. According to Punchstats, total punches landed were only 130-120 in Alvarez's favor but he had a much larger advantage in power punches. In the first half of the fight, Golovkin looked every bit of his 40 years of age, but with hindsight, he was obviously saving some energy for the second haf of the fight, and in fact he did much better starting in round seven or eight. There was also an accidental clash of heads that saw ALvarez sustain a small cut over his right eye. In his post-fight interview, Alvarez said he had a damaged left hand that will require surgery. It seems likely Alvarez may not fight again until May of next year. The fight brings to an end a great three-fight rivalry that officially has Alvarez winning two, with one draw, but most fans believe Golovkin won at least one, if not both of the two fights that took place in 2017 and 2018. Afterwards, Golovkin said he will return to the middleweight division, where he holds the WBA and IBF championships.
