Alvarez: "Boxing is my life and I am here to win"

Billy Joe Saunders and Canelo Alvarez exchanged words as they went head to head at their final press conference on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s super middleweight unification showdown. The event takes place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas this weekend and will be broadcast live on DAZN, as unbeaten WBO super middleweight champion Saunders (30-0, 14 KOs) faces WBC and WBA champion Alvarez (55-1-2, 37 KOs). The two men had plenty to say to each other during the final press conference, and Saunders is in a confident mood ahead of the battle.

Alvarez said simply: “I’m really thankful with the response of the people. Boxing is a sport that brings everything back to normal, and I’m ready for this fight. Saunders is a great fighter and has a lot of abilities and he’s also a southpaw, but I’m not the same fighter from six or seven years ago and on Saturday I will show that. I’ve been involved in a lot of big fights and this is just another day at the office. Boxing is my life and I am here to win.”

Saunders said: “I’ve been boxing all my life since I was five. I’m here for no other reason other than to win. This is not about fame or publicity for me. Canelo has not had somebody come to win for a long time. He’s had people fly in, collect thier checks and fly out, but nobody has had the heart, soul and the IQ that I will bring to the ring. Canelo has done brilliant things for boxing. He’s a good champion but there’s a time in life where you get tested. Sometimes in life you forget where you’ve come from and forget what’s brought you to here, and he’s bumping into the wrong man on Saturday. We’re happy with the judges, so we just want it all to be fair. I’m looking forward to a good fight and most definitely getting the win. I’ve been up against the crowd before. I travelled as an amateur to the Olympics at 18, and there is no bigger pressure than that. There is added pressure for both of us, as none of us want to go home the loser. We’ll get it rocking and rolling, and this is for all of the Gypsies and everybody in the UK.”
