On Monday December 6, 2004, Robert Mittleman, a promoter, manager, matchmaker and possiblly a booking agent, was convicted of two counts of sports bribery and one count of bribery of a public official. According to an e-mail from the Association of Boxing Commissions, Mittleman admitted to making arrangements with professional boxer Thomas Williams to lose boxing matches against Brian Nielsen in Denmark and Richie Melito in Las Vegas. Mittleman was paid $1000 each time and Williams made a total of $55,000 for the two fixed fights. The ABC e-mail also states that Mittleman further admitted that on October 30, 2003, knowing that Williams had been indicted, he contacted an undercover officer in Las Vegas and offered $15,000 to bribe a federal prosecutor and a United States District Judge to get the case against Williams dismissed. On December 12, 2003, Mittleman made a down payment of $3,000 to the undercover officer. Mittleman plead guilty but avoided jail time. The ABC is now encouraging each of its member commissions to determine if Mittleman is acting in its jurisdiction in any capacity which would require a license. If it is determined that Mittleman is functioning in such a capacity, the ABC requested the state commission to take appropriate action immediately to seek injunctive relief or, if warranted, criminal action for acting without a license.
