23 years into pro career, Holyfield still a heavyweight player

Evander Holyfield W10 Lou Savarese... The incredible career of Evander Holyfield will continue as the 44 year old legend defeated Lou Savarese in an exciting heavyweight contest in El Paso, Texas. Holyfield and Savarese hurt each other in the second and third rounds, but Holyfield went on to knock Savarese down in the fourth and ninth rounds to earn  a ten-round decision by scores of 99-87, 98-90 and 96-91. Holyfield is 42-8-2 for his 23 year career and 4-0 on his latest comeback run The 1984 Olympian, former world cruiserweight champion and two-time former world heavyweight champion (he also held portions of the heavyweight titles on two additional occasions) now has put together recent wins over Jeremy Bates, Fres Oquendo, Vinnie Maddalone and Savarese. While that's not exactly a murderer's row, there is no other heavyweight contender besides Sam Peter that has done better. Holyfield has earned a title shot, and the only question is will he squeeze in one more fight before going after the winner of the Ruslan Chagaev-Sultan Ibragimov WBA/WBO unification bout, scheduled for the fall. Savarese, who transformed himself over the years from a protected fighter into a game warrior, said he was going to retire. He has a legitimate role in a horror film coming out soon, and after wins over ex-champs Buster Douglas and Tim Witherspoon and exciting fights against Holyfield and George Foreman, Boxingtalk wishes him success in his acting career. source: associated press
