"Chocolotito" Gonzalez wins fifth world title

Roman Gonzalez TKO9 Khalid Yafai... For the fifth time in his career, Roman "Chocolotito" Gonzalez has won a world title. This time, Gonzalez defeated a younger, undefeated Khalid Yafai to claim the WBA 115-pound championship. Gonzalez, the greatest boxer in Nicaraguan history, knocked Yafai down in round eight and out in round nine, with the referee stopping the bout without bothering to finish the ten count. Although the win represents a huge accomplishment for Gonzalez, the story of the fight was Yafai's headscratching decision to abandon not only his jab but also his Olympic pedigree in order to recklessly trade punches with Gonzalez, a future Hall of Famer. Now 49-2 with 41 KOs, Gonzalez overcame a cut near his right eye that was caused by an inadvertent headbutt from Yafai. Gonzalez scored a knockdown in round eight from an accumulation of punches, then landed a hard right in round nine to end the fight. Gonzalez is 32 years old, and won his first world title at 105 pounds in 2008, an eternity ago for small boxers, who typically have short careers. Gonzalez went on to win titles at 108, 112 and 115 pounds, but was brutally knocked out in 2018 by Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, and was thought to be past his prime Well, on Saturday in Frisco, Texas, he extended his prime. Yafai, a 2008 Olympian, falls to 26-1 with 15 KOs. source: dazn
