WBC CONFIRMS DIRRELL VS. YILDIRIM FOR VACANT TITLE

The WBC confirms that Anthony Dirrell of the United States and  Turkey's Avni Yildirum will box each other for the vacant WBC super middleweight title on February 23rd in Minneapolis, Minnesota. FOx outlets will broadcast the show as part of a Premier Boxing Champions event. The title became vacant when David Benavidez (20-0) failed a drug test and was declared “champion in recess” at the WBC Convention last October. Benavidez was suspended for six months after an adverse result in a test conducted as part of the WBC Clean Boxing Program. As a result, Dirrell (32-1-1, 24 KOs) was ordered to face Yildirim (21-1, 12 KOs) to fill the vacancy. Dirrell held the same title from 2014-2015, losing it by majority decision to Badou Jack.  “This chance to be a WBC champion feels good and it motivates me. Yildirim is a good fighter and I will be ready for the challenge,” promised Dirrell. For his part, Yildirim has won five straight since getting stopped by Chris Eubank, Jr. in 2017. --Scott Shaffer
