EX-CHAMP MARKUS BEYER DEAD AT 48

Website Deutsch Welle and German public broadcaster MDR report that three-time WBC super middleweight champion Markus Beyer has died at the young age of 47 from an undisclosed "serious illness" that he battled for a short time. Beyer came up in the final years of Communist East Germany, and represented the newly-united Germany in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. In 1992, he lost to eventual Olympic Champion Juan Carlos Lemus.  As a pro, Beyer went 35-3, winning the WBC 168-pound title against Richie Woodhall (1999), Eric Lucas (2003) and Christian Sanavia (2004). He lost his titles to Glen Catley (2000), Christian Sanavia (2004) and Mikkel Kessler (2006). He retired due to injuries in 2008 after a win. Recently he worked as a boxing commentator. Boxingtalk sends its condolences to the friends and family of former champion Markus Beyer. --Scott Shaffer
