IOC PUTS AIBA ON THIN ICE

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided over the weekend to initiate an investigation that could lead to the withdrawal of AIBA's right to govern amateur boxing. The IOC did not discuss eliminating boxing from the Olympics. The IOC noted several areas of significant concern about AIBA, particularly the governance, ethics and financial management of the troubled organization. The IOC adopted the following severe limitations on AIBA's powers during the pendency of the investigation: it  froze AIBA's planning of Olympic boxing for the Tokyo 2020 games, including official contact between AIBA and the Tokyo Organizing Committee, and barred AIBA from any involvement in ticket sales, approval and implementation of the qualification system, test event planning and the finalization of the competition schedule. It also prohibited AIBA from using the Olympic rings logo and the Tokyo 2020 logo for any communications/ advertising and/or promotional materials. --Scott Shaffer
