Promoter Tony Holden remembers Randie Carver, who died of head injuries sustained in a boxing match: "Nineteen years ago tonight (9/12/99), Kansas City's heart was broken. Randie Carver was an undefeated fighter and NABF Champion. He was fighting on national television in front of his hometown crowd. Seated ringside were 75 screaming kids from the Boys Ranch, a housing compound for troubled young men. Randie was a regular there, a mentor that gave hope to these kids. A week before the fight, Randie purchased 75 tickets for the boys and the cost took a large portion of his fight purse. Randie was was the most caring young man I ever met. He was a part of my family and he always wanted to come hang out with my children. On this September night, Randie stepped into the ring for the biggest fight of his career. During the fight [against Kabary Salem], Randie received several head butts and without warning he collapsed. Randie never woke up and passed away four days later. He had so many friends and many of us will never recover from that tragic night. I was proud to be Randie's friend and promoter. Tonight my thoughts and prayers will be with Randie's family." --Scott Shaffer
