Press Release: Toowoomba, Australia's Kris George, the current Commonwealth welterweight champion, gets a hometown fight on March 10th at Rumours International. George (13-1) will meet Argentinian Maximiliano Scalzone (16-1-1) with the winner to claim the Brayd Smith WUC title in honor of the late Australian boxer. "I'm very excited to be fighting back home," George said. "There are some exciting prospects in the near future so it will be great to be performing in front of a home crowd again. Fighting for the Brayd Smith title means a lot to me and I'm very keen to get my hands on one of those belts."
Although 12 of Scalzone's 16 wins have come by way of knockout, George said, "As an opponent its another unknown. He has a great record which never comes easy so I'm prepared for a war. I'll be in peak condition and I'm looking to make a big statement on March 10th."
The George vs Scalzone fight is the fourth Brayd Smith title bout on the stacked card. "It's a very special night for everyone involved," Promoter Brendon Smith (Brayd's father) said. "To have our Commonwealth Champion Kris George fighting for a Brayd Smith belt is a huge draw for fight fans. Kris has been to Sydney where he was the star of the show. It was a similar story in New Zealand when he stunned Bowyn Morgan. To have him back in the ring in Toowoomba is huge.
Brendon Smith continued, "Kris is a serious player on the world stage, if he can win here on March 10th it's quite possible his next bout will be a significant stepping stone towards a world title."
