AWUKU IS EASY WORK FOR BERCHELT IN MEXICO
By Scott Shaffer

Miguel Berchelt TKO3 Maxwell Awuku...  In Cancun, Mexico, Miguel Berchelt retained the WBC 130-pound championship with a third-round stoppage of Maxwell Awuku of Ghana. A late replacement, Awuku had little time to prepare for a world title challenge, and Berchelt had little problem with him. Berchelt knocked down Awuku twice in the third, and Awuku beat the count, but just barely, both times. Berchelt was landing big punches at will against a trapped Awuku when the referee ended the bout. Awuku, who ended the career of a badly faded former champion Lehlo Ledwaba in 2006, suffered the first stoppage loss of his 49-fight pro career. Berchelt, who won the title from Francisco Vargas a little more than a year ago, is now 33-1. Awuku, with few true world class credentials, drops to 44-4-1. source: boxnation
