WBC LIFTS LUIS ORTIZ'S SUSPENSION
The WBC announced it has restored heavyweight Luis Ortiz to good standing despite Ortiz's positive test for a banned substance. The WBC accepted Ortiz's explanation that he took the banned substance as high blood pressure medication due to an ongoing medical condition. Most jurisidictions will grant an exemption for prescribed medications (known as a Therapeutic Use Exemption or TUE) provided the use is disclosed prior to the test. Ortiz did not disclose his use until after he tested positive and the WBC fined him $25,000 for his nondisclosure. However, the WBC reports, "As of the date of this ruling, Mr. Ortiz is available to compete in WBC-sanctioned events, and shall be confirmed in the WBC ratings in a position consistent with the recommendation of the WBC Ratings Committee."
