ESTRADA BEATS CUADRAS AFTER BEING ANNOUNCED AS THE LOSER
By Scott Shaffer

Juan F. Estrada W12 Carlos Cuadras... A thrilling match in Carson, California saw a confused ending as ring announcer Michael Buffer announced the wrong winner.  The error was quickly corrected and Juan Francisco Estrada received a unanimous verdict over Carlos Cuadras by three scores of 114-113. Estrada, a former world flyweight champion, knocked Cuadras down once and that turned out to be the difference in the fight, as Cuadras was credited with landing a few more punches (167-159) over the thrilling fight.  The fight was a WBC eliminator in the 115-pound division.

For the first three rounds, Cuadras (36-2-1) consistently beat Estrada (36-2)  to the punch but from round four on, Estrada worked his way back into the fight. In the middle rounds, Estrada was landing the harder, and at times, the more frequent punches. Round seven was a particularly fierce one and it went in Estrada's favor. Cuadras regrouped in round eight but a hard straight right by Estrada knocked Cuadras down in the tenth round. Estrada hurt Cuadras at the end of the eleventh. The fight seemed to be up for grabs in the twelfth round and Cuadras was more active but after the confusion surrounding the verdict was sorted out, Estrada was declared the winner.  Source: HBO
