WBC SANCTIONS BENAVIDEZ VS. GAVRIL FOR TITLE BELT
The WBC has sanctioned David Benavidez vs. Ronald Gavril for its vacant 168-pound title. The title became vacant when Badou Jack moved up to 175 pounds. Then top-ranked Callum Smith entered the World Boxing Super Series, but the greedy WBC, rather than recognize that tournament's winner as its new champ, created two paper titles, the "diamond belt" that Smith will compete for, and this redundant title. Benavidez at age 20-0 and 18-0 is a blue-chip prospect. Gavril (18-1) has a 2015 loss to Elvin Ayala and no wins over a true contender. Gavril slipped into the title picture when Anthony Dirrell claimed an injury. Promoter Tom Brown Promotions intends to stage Benavidez vs. Gavril on September 8th.
