JUAREZ WINS THIRD WOMEN'S TITLE

Mariana Juárez (45-9-4) became the WBC bantamweight champion, and the first Mexican woman to capture world titles in three weight categories. Juarez defeated Zambia's Catherine Phiri (12-2) via ten-round decision in the Zócalo in Mexico City. Respecting Phiri's power, Juarez established her left jab in the opening round, but Phiri unleashed quick combinations to the head.  Juarez went into attack mode in the third, snapping Phiri's head back.  However, Juarez's own face was starting to swell and her nose was bleeding. Both ladies tested each other's chins in the sixth with a prolonged exchange, thirty seconds from the bell. Both were stung, yet neither backed off. In the seventh, Juarez launched another attack to head and body but herself was was staggered by a right hook. She sagged momentarily and her nose was again dripping blood but she fought back with a defiant combination. Phiri was losing rounds but landed long left jabs in another exchange in the ninth. Juarez took the championship by scores of 98-91, 99-90 and 97-92, a result that caused Juarez to shed tears of joy. source: wbc
