WBA ORDERS SANTA CRUZ VS. MARES REMATCH
The WBA has ordered a rematch between Mexican-American featherweights Leo Santa Cruz (33-1-1, 18 KOs) and Abner Mares (30-2-1, 15 KOs). In the 126-pound featherweight division, Santa Cruz holds the WBA's super championship and Mares holds the regular championship. They fought back in 2015, with Santa Cruz winning by majority decision. According to the WBA's order, the boxers were allowed a thirty-day negotiating period, and if no agreement is reached, the WBA will proceed to a purse bid.
Since defeating Mares, Santa Cruz, defended his super champion belt against Kiko Martinez with a stoppage win, then lost it to Carl Frampton by majority decision, but regained it from Frampton in a rematch on January 28th.
Since losing to Santa Cruz, Mares only fought once. He won the regular title in December 2016, when he defeated unanimously Argentina's Jesus Cuellar.
