HBO RESULTS: GOLOVKIN DESTROYS MACKLIN
By G. Leon
Gennady Golovkin KO3 Matthew Macklin: At Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin scored the most impressive victory so far in his career as he absolutely destroyed Matthew Macklin in three rounds. GGG (pictured) totally overwhelmed Macklin for two and a half rounds before landing a perfectly placed liver shot that sent Macklin down for the ten count and then some. This was like watching a hot knife cut through soft butter. Besides being pulverized to the body, Macklin, the same guy who gave Sergio Martinez a tough fight, had a bad cut over his left eye and a bruise under his right eye. Martinez is the true world middleweight champion, while Golovkin has two belts, but if they meet in the ring, Golovkin would be favored. GGG improves to 27-0 with 24 KOs while Macklin drops to 29-5.
Thomas Oosthuizen D10 Brandon Gonzales... Super middleweight Thomas Oosthuizen is very fortunate to be able to call himself an undefeated fighter after Saturday's ten rounder against Brandon Gonzalez. "Tommy Gun" Oosthuizen from South Africa possibly lost the first five rounds and was fortunate to leave the ring with a draw. He did his best to rally back in the second half and clearly hurt Gonzales. But in his first ten-round fight, Gonzales landed the cleaner punches throughout and had Oosthuizen looking lost most of the time. Boxingtalk scored the fight a clean 96-94 for Gonzales, but the official scores were 98-92 Gonzales, 96-94 Oosthuizen and 95-95. It is difficult for these eyes to see any possible way Oosthuizen winning six rounds. There should be a rematch and it should be for Oosthuizen's IBO 168-pound title in a twelve-round fight. Oosthuizen is now 22-0-1 and Gonzales is 17-0-1.
Willie Nelson W10 Luciano L. Cuello... In the HBO opening bout, junior middleweight Willie Nelson (21-1-1) survived some very scary moments to win a hard-fought unanimous decision over the rugged Luciano Cuello (32-3). Nelson was nearly knocked out in rounds three, seven and ten, but thoroughly outworked the Argentine in the majority of the rounds to walk away with the victory. Hurt in the thenth, Nelson was very fortunate this was not a twelve-round fight. Official scores favored Nelson 97-93 (twice) and 96-94. Boxingtalk agreed, scoring it 97/93. source for all results: hbo
