PARIS GETS DEBATABLE DECISION IN HIS HOMETOWN
By Adam Denman
Vernon Paris W10 Manuel Perez... In the Motor City (Detroit), hometown welterweight Vernon Paris escaped with a debatable ten-round unanimous decision over Manuel Perez. Over the first two rounds, Paris displayed crafty technique, slipping most of Perezís punches while countering well with straight rights and the occasional left hook. But in round three, Perez began to pressure Paris and timed him perfectly, landing his right hand at will straight down the pipe. Paris began to fight back but held his lead left hand low and had no answer for the right as he continued to get hit over the next few rounds. By the sixth round, Perezís left eye started to close and Paris began to land his straighter punches over Perezís looping shots. Perez faded over the next few rounds but picked up the pace in the ninth and went back to the formula that worked earlier. In the closing round, Perez landed some nice shots but Paris used his defense to slip and roll many of Perezís shots and countered well in the closing minute. The official scores were 97-93, 96-94, and 98-92 for Paris but Boxingtalk scored the fight 96-95 for Perez. Paris is now 28-1, with the only loss coming against Zab Judah. Perez falls to 19-9-1.
Cornelius Lock W10 Lonnie Smith... In a featherweight fight, Cornelius Lock (21-6-1) won a unanimous decision over Lonnie Smith (14-5-3). Both fighters entered the ring having lost two of their last three bouts. Lock suffered two flash knockdowns (rounds four and five) that were questionable calls by the referee. Lock was the busier fighter of the two, and landed more crisper shots throughout the fight. In the tenth round, Smith was penalized one point for repeated mouth guard violations. Despite the knockdowns, Lock came out with a points victory. Official scores were 97-91, 96-92, and 95-92. Boxingtalk agreed, scoring the fight 95-92 for Lock. source for both results: espn2
