WRESTLING ELIMINATED FROM THE 2020 OLYMPICS
By Scott Shaffer
Modern pentathlon survives: are you kidding me?
Amateur boxing: clean up your mess before the sport suffers the same fate that amateur wrestling did today. Wrestling has been dropped as an Olympic sport by the International Olympic Committee starting with the 2020 games. The Olympics are transitioning away from common man's sports like wrestling towards rich people's sports like golf, which enters the Olympics in 2016. Barring a reversal of today's decision, 2016 will mark the final wrestling competition for the forseeable future, ending an Olympic run that began in Ancient Greek times and continued through the first modern Olympics in 1896 through the present. Among the criteria that the Olympic committee considered in dropping wrestling were: television ratings, ticket sales, anti-doping policy and global participation. Field hockey, the absurd rich man's sport of modern pentathlon (fencing, shooting guns, swimming, running and horse riding) and taekwondo all survived the cut through 2020.
