Rocky Martinez D12 Juan C. Burgos... Rocky Martinez was fortunate to retain the WBO 130-pound title, drawing with Juan Carlos Burgos in New York City's Madison Square Garden. Official scores were 117-111 for Burgos, 116-112 for Martinez and 114-114. Boxingtalk has Burgos winning narrowly, while HBO's Harold Lederman saw Burgos winning clearly, 117-111. Compubox favored Burgos, 286 punches landed to 193. Martinez was the faster boxer, but Burgos seemed stronger and fought effectively off the ropes. After five close rounds, the action opened up in the sixth, with Martinez evening things up on Boxingtalk's scorecard. Burgos did some good body work from the seventh on. By the tenth, Burgos' investment in body punches seemed to pay off, as a combination wobbled Martinez slightly. For the rest of the round, Burgos effectively employed a traditional Mexican come-forward attack. Perhaps taking the eleventh off, Burgos went back to countering and Martinez won the round. Burgos, however, took the twelfth, and according to Boxingtalk deserved a 115-113 decision. With the draw, Martinez's recent run of good luck continued: in his last fight, he captured the WBO 130-pound title thanks to referee Russell Mora's point deduction. It was Burgos' second world title bid, the first one a loss to WBC featherweight champ Hozumi Hasegawa in 2010. Prior to tonight, Burgos had won five in a row since losing to Hozumi.
