FORTUNA TOPS HYLAND IN FEATHERWEIGHT BOUT
By Scott Shaffer
Javier Fortuna W12 Patrick Hyland... Javier Fortuna prevailed over Patrick Hyland in a match-up of two undefeated but untested featherweights. The Dominican Fortuna won the twelve round bout unanimously, by scores of 118-110, 116-112, 115-113. Fortuna (21-0) won the first four rounds, but seemed to tire during the middle rounds. Hyland's effectiveness began increasing during the fifth round, and although his rally was not a sustained one, Hyland was the benficiary of a very rough ninth round. The Irish Hyland (27-1) threw Fortuna to the canvas, cut him, and arguably dropped Fortuna, but referee Russell Mora did not count it. Despite never having gone past ten rounds in his career, Fortuna rebounded enough to win the championship rounds and erase any claim Hyland might have had to the victory.
At stake was a third-rate WBA interim title, the organization's third currently existing "world" featherweight title. It is ridiculous that the WBA would award an interim title when it already has Chris John as a super champion and another fight scheduled in Australia for the vacant regular title, but the WBA treats its championships like Halloween candy, passing them out to anyone who knocks on the door.
Even though he owns a title belt, Fortuna needs to improve his conditioning and continue improving before he can truly be considered near the top of the 126-pound division. On the promotional side, Fortuna over Hyland represented a win for Sampson Lewkowicz and Sergio Martinez (who guide Fortuna's fortunes) over reality show star Snooki Polizzi (who joined Hyland in the ring with her father, Hyland's promoter). source: hbo pay-per-view
