BAM BAM RIOS DELIVERS ALL-ACTION TKO IN JUNIOR WELTER DEBUT
By Scott Shaffer

Brandon Rios TKO7 Mike Alvarado... He took a lot of punishment, but ex-WBA lightweight titlist Brandon Rios took Mike Alvarado's best shots and came back with bombs of his own that stopped Alvarado in the seventh round in Carson, California.  Rios (30-0-1) surrendered his 135-pound title when he couldn't make the weight, but in this, his 140-pound debut, he showed the same power, fearlessness and lust for battle that made him a must-see fighter. Rios-Alvarado was a war from the opening bell, with Rios winning the first round but in the following rounds, the previously undefeated Alvarado landed some huge uppercuts while blistering Rios with non-stop punches. After six rounds, both boxers' faces showed plenty of damage. Alvarado (33-1) was credited by Compubox with throwing 779 punches in less than seven rounds, but Rios negated the punches thrown advantage with a single punch in the seventh that badly hurt Alvarado. There was no knockdown, but Alvarado was badly hurt and did not seem to complain much when the referee stopped the bout.  source: hbo boxing after dark
