SHANE MOSLEY: ALVAREZ IS IN FOR A SURPRISE
By John McCormick
On the tail end of Chad Dawson's majority decision win over 47 year-old Bernard Hopkins, Golden Boy Promotions gives us another "youth vs. experience" fight when Saul "Canelo" Alvarez faces 40 year-old "Sugar" Shane Mosley in Las Vegas on Saturday.
"Canelo will be surprised when he's not fighting the 40-year-old he thinks I am" stated Mosley, shwoing confidence despite the fact that he has not won a fight since January 2009.
Mosley will be fighting for Alvarez's WBC 154-pound title in the co-feature to the big Floyd Mayweather-Miguel Cotto pay-per-view event.
Last Saturday after Chad Dawson dethroned Bernard Hopkins, Dawson went on to say that "Bernard isn't as old as he looks" during his post fight interview with HBO. But can the same be said about Mosley? Mosley looked every bit of his age in his failed outings against Floyd Mayweather in 2010 and Manny Pacquiao in 2011.
There is no doubt that Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are the cream of the crop and are on a completely different level than Alvarez. But Mosley has also had a disappointing performance against Sergio Mora in 2010, a fighter that shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as Pacquiao or Mayweather.
Does Mosley have another big win in his horizon? Or will the pattern that has been displayed in the past few years continue to be evident? For his part, Mosley is confident in his ability to look impressive on Saturday. "I feel young, but I have the wisdom of an older fighter" stated Mosley. "I'm not going to rule the fight, I'm going to dominate. I will be the first fighter to beat Canelo."
