GOLDEN BOY OUTBIDS DON KING FOR BUNDRAGE-SPINKS II
By Scott Shaffer
In a surprise move, Golden Boy Promotions won an IBF purse bid and now holds the right to promote Cornelius Bundrage's IBF 154-pound mandatory title defense against Cory Spinks. According to Lindsey Tucker of the IBF, Golden Boy submitted a winning bid in the amount of $211,000, more than four times the paltry $51,000 bid submitted by Spinks' promoter, Don King. The $211,000 is to be split 75% to Bundrage and 25% to Spinks. There is no word on whether Bundrage also signed a long-term promotional contract with Golden Boy, although Boxingtalk has placed calls to Bundrage to inquire. IBF rules allow Golden Boy fifteen days to fix the date of the fight, but Bundrage-Spinks II is believed to be headed to San Jose, California on July 28th underneath a Robert Guerrero fight. Bundrage won the title from Spinks in 2010 but has defended it just once since then due to promotional issues with Don King. Spinks, a former multi-division champion, was dismissed as washed up after losing to Bundrage, but the "Spinks Jinx" struck again when he earned a return go at Bundrage by defeating Sechew Powell in an IBF eliminator earlier this year.
