EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: GARY SHAW
By Stephen "Breadman" Edwards

Big Gary Shaw Lets Angulo Have It

I'm going to start off with a tough question. Why has some of your top fighters over the past few years left you. James Kirkland, Alfredo Angulo and Tim Bradley?: Well first of all when you're telling the truth there are no tough questions. There are alot of reasons fighters leave. First off, I'm not a self promoter. I didn't get in this game so much to make money, I do it for the love of the game. I'm one of the few promoters who actually fall in love with the fighters.

You have promoters who come in and actually attempt to steal fighters from me. You also have managers like Cameron Dunkin who is my bitter enemy who will do anything to take fighters away from me. He led Nonito Donaire and James Kirkland away from me. I knew when Tim Bradley signed with Dunkin that our days were numbered with him.

I forgot you had Donaire. People don't realize how many of the big guns you have had: Yes, I had Donaire, I promoted Manny Pacquiao, Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Winky Wright, Shane Mosley, Chico Corrales. Back to whay I was saying. Michelle Corrales and I are still very close. She will tell you how Golden Boy tried to steal Chico from me. Some fighters have no loyalty, they think the grass in greener on the other side, but it's not always that way.

Not only do we have TV dates but in my opinion we have the best matchmaker in John Beninati. You have to have fighters with talent but you also have to know how to make them look good. At GSP we know how to make fighters look good. Now every promoter is not like that. I do get along with Thompson Boxing, Dibella and Artie Pellulo.

Tell me what you thought of the fight and what happened between you and Alfredo Angulo?: I thought it was an excellent action fight and Jamees Kirkland looked great. If Golden Boy would have CUT Kirkland if he lost, I would have looked to sign him. Not saying he would have signed with me, but I would have been up for it. Kirkland also left me, but the difference is he never said a bad word about me. I actually saw him a while ago and he walked over to me and gave me a hug.

So why did Kirkland leave and what happened with Angulo?:  Kirkland left because I didn't fill out a Muhammad Ali disclosure for one of his figghts. Cameron Dunkin used that and I didn't feel like fighting it in court.

Good Karma will always win out. Lou Dibella offered me a 900k package for Angulo to fight Sergio Martinez. I offered him 750k out of the package. I also called the WBC and WBO to make sure he keep his ranking at junior middlweight. I also called HBO to insure he would get another fight on HBO, in case he lost to Martinez at middlweight. I did all that I could to protect my fighter. We were set to go. I called him and I was excited, I wanted to share the good news with him. I spoke with a young lady named Tanya, his personal assistant. I heard him in the background. He asked for 1 million dollars. I told him I couldn't give him 1 million dollars. There was only 900k on the table. I still had to pay for his team's travel among other things. I tried to call him over a 100 times and he never spoke to me. I even called his manager Mike Criscio and told him about the situation. Criscio tried to get him to take the fight but it didn't happen. Angulo still has not spoken to me since that time.

I can name the names of the people who were in his circle at the time. Clemente Medina, Nacho De La Hoya, Cesar Hernandez. He kicked everybody to the curb. Angulo is a dog, he is a bad dog. He's a liar and and a bad person and he got his Karma. The dog had his day.

What do you think of the train of thought that Golden Boy was cashing Kirkland out?: I don't blame Richard Schaffer. I blame Mike Miller and Cameron Dunkin. I know for a fact that Mike Miller is involved with BOTH Angulo and Kirkland. I can't prove it but I suspect Dunkin is . I know Dunkin is involved with Kirkland. This fight was a set up from the beginning, look at the scores. How could Kirkland only be up 1 point? He was dominating the fight.

See nobody gives us credit for making the RIGHT fights. We put the right fighters in front of our guys. Angulo can't deal with a boxer. Once James starting boxing and using his jab the fight was over. Angulo needs someone in front of him.

Interesting. Last question what do you think of two fighters this highly regarded fighting in a non title fight?: I think BOTH fighters got screwed by their managers and advisors. They should have fought on HBO about two or three times in seperate fights to build it up. Then they could have fought possibly with a title on the line for alot more money than they made last night.

I appreciate the call Gary: No problem buddy, thank you.
