LONGTIME BOXNG WRITER VIC ZIEGEL DIES AT 72
By Scott Shaffer
Vic Ziegel, a well-known and eloquent sportswriter for New York's Daily News, has died at the age of 72 due to lung cancer (Ziegel was not a smoker). His career covering boxing spanned several decades. In 1983, Ziegler won the Nat Fleischer Award for excellence in boxing journalism from the Boxing Writers Association of America. Later, he was one of the first to report on the effects that Parkinson's was having on Muhammad Ali. He also traveled to Indiana in the 1990s to conduct a jailhouse interview with Mike Tyson. The son of Eastern European immigrants, Ziegel once wrote with his typical humor, "the boat [my father] came over on didn't have shuffleboard." Boxingtalk extends its condolences to the friends and family of Vic Ziegel.
