EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: DEMARCUS CORLEY
By Michael Walters
Corley looking to Chop his way back into contention
MW: You got a fight coming up in Kazakhstan on the 28th what do you know about your opponent?
Demarcus Corley: I think he's 11-1 or 10-1 he's a young prospect. The fights scheduled to go ten but it'll probably go four.
MW: You've fought seven times in the last year, what's up with all the activity?
DC:I got to get back on top. I want a title fight again. I want to become a world champion. There are a couple of fighters out there that I want to fight. We have to get back into ranking condition to get ranked by one of the sanctioning bodies so we can get a title fight.
MW: You had a bunch of good wins early on in your career then you lost six in a row how do you plan to come back from opponent to top level contender status?
DC: I just need to keep fighting. We're scheduled to fight in Russia in November. Then we'll be looking to come right back sometime in Feburary 2010 in Vegas on a undercard.
MW: So at this point you ultimate goal is to win another world championship?
DC: Yes, 100%. I recently read on boxingtalk.com that there might be a super lightweight tournament.
MW: Is that something that you might be interested in trying to be involved with?
DC: Yes, that is something that I would love to get involved with. My thing is to win this fight and then see if we can get connected with the right people before they start the tournament so we can get into it. I fought Devon Alexander and that was a 12 round decsion that he won and I know that I wasn't at my peak when I fought so I know a second time around it'll be a different fight.
MW: If the tournament doesn't happen or you're not able to be involved who would you like to get in the ring with?
DC: I want Juan Urango or Marcos Maidana. Anyone in the top ten I want to fight if I can't be involved in this tournament.
MW: Do you think it's realistic that you get involved with the tournament? It seems that a lot of the names mentioned are the young guns of the division and you're 35, do you think HBO would consider you?
DC: My age says 35 but I fight like I am 30.
MW: When are you leaving for Kazakhstan and how long will need to get acclimated to the time change?
DC: I have been there twice and I took care of business both times I went over there. Our game plan is to get over there seven days before the fight take two days to get acclimated to the climate and then go from there.
MW: Is there anything that you would like to say in closing?
DC: I just want to thank Boxingtalk.com for this interview and I look forward to putting on a great performance. I got a boxing shoe that's going to be coming out for kids in 2010 and we're working on a clothing line also. The website will be up and running as of December the first at demarcuscorley.com so check out the website.
