FLORES NOT TOO THRILLED WITH SQUARE RING
By Michael Walters
Boxingtalk: When can we expect to see you in the ring next and against who?
BJ Flores: To be honest with you, I have no idea. I was supposed to go to Australia with [my promoter] Roy Jones on December 2nd and [Roy's company] Square Ring recently told me that I won't be going over there. I have a fight-by-fight contract with Square Ring and they don't have anything on the table for me right now and I am just trying to get something going. It's the end of the year and I am in a good situation and I just can't seem to get something going. I've been talking to Square Ring and trying to be on them about what they have coming up for me. Like I said, I was supposed to be going to Australia and then they told me I wasn't and I'm not really sure bro, it's kind of frustrating.
BT: So is it looking like you'll be fight next quarter or do you really have no idea?
BF: I am not exactly sure, [but] I would hope. I would think it should be the end of this year or it better be early next year. We're trying to figure things out, Square Ring and I. We're trying to figure out what is the best move to make. Obviously it's important that they get me fights to fight, especially at the stage I am at right now. If they can't, I need to find someone who can. It's frustrating, I don't know when I am fighting next and to be told you are on a card and then you're not the card is very frustrating, especially when you are counting on that money at the end of the year. It's another opportunity to to get the rust off and it's just very frustrating.
BT: Who did they have penciled in to fight? Was it going to be an eight rounder a ten rounder?
BF: They had a couple guys rated in the top 15. A guy name Johnny Walker who is rated number 12 or 13. They had another guy from Australia who is rated in the top 15 by the WBO and they were talking about both these guys and either one of them would have been fine. It would have been no problem. Really the only fight that I am really interested in, I am rated #2 by the WBO is [WBO champion] Marco Huck. I want the winner of Huck and [Ola] Afolabi. Afolabi could win, but I want the winner. I plan on going to Germany December 5th and making my presence known. I want Huck or Afolabi, I think it'll be tough for Afolabi to win a decision over there but I think he could knock him out. Afolabi is a really tough game guy. If I can't get the winner of that then I want the winner of [WBC champ Giaccobe] Fragomeni and [WBO light heavyweight champ Zsolt] Erdei. I don't really care about anyone else. If I can get a tune-up or whatever in between, but I am not interested in any other names. Those are the big names in the division where I can make some good money and guys that I will beat. If my promoter could just line up those fights for me, I could become a world champion as soon as they would set those fights up for me. It's kind of like my hands are tied you know, I can't do my own business.
BT: Would you be willing to fight Huck in Germany? Your promoter seemed to always have issues about fighting abroad.
BF: I am not in a situation were I can say where I want to fight. I don't care where I fight these guys. Message to the promoters just get me the fight and I'll fight these guys were ever. If they can get me the fight with Huck or the winner of Erdei and Fragomeni I don't care were. I'll fight them in their backyard it does not matter to me. Just make the deal and give me the opportunity and I'll go over there and do it because I can't do it myself. I wanted Victor Emilio Ramirez before Ramirez fought Huck. I was begging and screaming for Ramirez but we couldn't get Ramirez blah, blah, blah, the Germans offered him a lot of money. I was trying to get Fragomeni so Square Ring contacted his promoter and said we'll fight you in November no problem but, they ignored our calls. They didn't want to do business with us. So then they make a fight with Zsolt Erdei. It's ridiculous that he could even get a fight for the cruiserweight title. I mean even though he was the [WBO] light heavyweight champion, he was the biggest, most protected light heavyweight champion of all time I would say if you look at his record. He never really beat anybody. I am not one to take credit away from a fighter but this guy never really beat anyone at light heavyweight and now he gets a shot at Fragomeni. I've been screaming for those fights for the last six months. I am really frustrated right now. I just want one of those big fights you know.
BT: You have a fight-by-fight contract, so would you be looking to work with another promoter?
BF: I mean I could do it if I wanted to so I am open to deal with any promoter that I want to on a fight by fight basis. I could take an offer from another promoter and Square Ring has fifteen days to match that offer. I mean it's whoever can get me the fights right now. I mean whoever can get me the opportunities that's what I want to do. Square Ring insisted on signing a fight-by-fight contract with me and that actually works to my advantage.
BT: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?
BF: I just want the winner of Huck or Afolabi or I want the winner of Edrei and Fragomeni. I am just trying to stay busy I am super hungry. I got some great sparring in with Chad Dawson last week out in Las Vegas. Look for him to do big things against Glen Johnson but, to Chad: champ I appreciate the work and thanks for letting me come in and work with you and good luck on Saturday. He's going to be fantastic on Saturday so look out for that.
