Press Release: Jose Armando Santa-Cruz, of Lincoln Hts., Calif. will defend his regional lightweight title on a big card in Houston on Friday, August 26. The Top Rank fight card will be televised by Solo Boxeo on Telefutura. Santa-Cruz, 24, is trained by Rudy Hernandez who also works with Carlos "Famoso" Hernandez. Santa-Cruz is a 20-0 well-conditioned, technically-sound lightweight who strikes with power. He is coming off a fourth-round technical knockout over Ernesto and on August 26, he will take on Fernando Trejo of Pachuca, Mexico in a twelve-round title fight.

"Santa-Cruz is willing to fight anyone, he has a great corner in Rudy Hernandez and we think he is the total package and a future world champion," said Brad Goodman, Top Rank matchmaker.

Also in Houston will be USA Olympian Vanes Martiroysan, a super welterweight who is trained by Freddie Roach. Vanes, called 'The Nightmare,'  is from Glendale, Calif. He is 2-0 and will box in his first six-round bout. Vanes is 19 years old.

Mike Alvarado, 9-0 with 8 knockouts, of Denver will take on Chad Lawshe. Alvarado and Martiroysan are handled by Shelly Finkel. Alvarado, a former national amateur wrestling champion while in high school, likes to attack early and is a super lightweight.

Victor Ortiz, a 7-1 lightweight from Oxnard, Calif., will box in a six rounder. He is only 18 and is a former National Jr. Olympic and National PAL champion. Victor had it tough growing up - as a young boy he was abandoned, he was in a foster home but battled through it, worked hard to get good grades in high school and matured into an amateur star before signing with Top Rank.

The fights will be at the D & I Colonial Ballroom Club, 6610 Capitol St., Houston.

Notebook - Top Rank/Telefutura will be in Chicago on Friday, Sept. 16, on the eve of 'Adios Phoenix' which will feature Julio Cesar Chavez, his undefeated teenage son Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and a riveting matchup between undefeated middleweight Jesus 'El Martillo' Gonzales and Jose Luis Zertuche at the America West Arena in Phoenix on Saturday, Sept. 17.
