Report: Julio César Martínez is recovered from hand injury

The WBC reports that its flyweight champion, Julio César Martínez is recovered from the fracture he suffered to his right hand and is back in the gym waiting for a date to defend his title against the interim title holder McWilliams Arroyo of Puerto Rico. Martínez, who pulled out just days before he was scheduled to fight Arroyo, shared how his injury occurred. “I was boxing with a guy a little heavier than me. I flipped him over and and that’s where the inflammation of the hand began to hurt. When we went to the doctor, he diagnosed me with a metacarpal fracture, so the fight was cancelled. We are seeing if in May we ready for action. We are discussing that with [my trainer / manager] Eddy Reynoso and in turn, with the promoter Eddie Hearn,” said the champion.

McWilliams, who was Martinez's mandatory challenger for the division, knocked out late replacement Abraham ‘Choco’ Rodríguez to win the WBC interim title.

Martínez thanked Ciro Nucci, President of the Mexico City Boxing Commission, for his support concerning his recent injury. “The truth is, since I was national champion, he has given me his unconditional support. He took me to his specialist, and he helped me a lot.”
